Sikiru Adetona Owonikoko, incoming District Governor of Rotary International District 9127, has declared that technology adoption, organisational discipline, and community-focused service will define his 2026/27 tenure.

Speaking at the 2026-2027 District Learning Seminars in Abuja on Tuesday, Owonikoko told the leaders that Rotary must adapt to global changes while strengthening its service culture.

“Things are changing around the globe, and Nigeria should not be left behind.

“We are trying to upgrade from what we are used to, to bring quality back to the organisation and improve the area of service,” he said.

He said digital platforms would make Rotary more accessible, allowing prospective members to participate without being physically present.

“With technology, you don’t need to come to a physical meeting or be present at a location before you can participate in a Rotary meeting,” he said, noting that this would help attract younger professionals.

Owonikoko also stressed the importance of discipline, describing it as central to efficiency and public perception, saying, “When there is discipline, everybody knows what to do at the right time, and things will flow well. The way Rotary operates directly shapes how the organisation is perceived”.

Reflecting on his 39-year journey in Rotary, he said, “Service before anything else,” emphasising that his leadership ambition is rooted in serving communities, not office.

He also addressed misconceptions about membership cost, highlighting Rotary’s “three Ts”—time, talent, and treasure.

“To save a child, it takes about 60 cents. If what it takes to save a child is less than a dollar, then what are we talking about?”, he asked, explaining that small contributions, when pooled, create meaningful impact in areas like water, sanitation, health, and community development.

Pearl Ijeoma Okoro, a Trustee of The Rotary Foundation, described the seminar as the first formal training session for incoming district leaders, aligning local plans with the incoming Rotary International President’s global agenda.

Current District Governor, Dame Princess Joy Okoro, noted that training district officers is vital to ensure smooth leadership transition.

The Trustee of The Rotary Foundation honoured Rot. Yusuf Alli with a badge of recognition for his dedication, highlighting his Rotary service excellence.
